My brother had to put a four-month-old calf down today. He found her lying on the ground outside the barn this morning, and she was unable to stand up. We think she probably slipped on some ice and broke a leg, or was bullied by some of the bigger cows until she had internal injuries, or something. I get out of bed and the first thing I hear is "MAGZ, calf in the vegetable garden!" So I grab yesterday's pants [black cargo capris] and a random t-shirt from the drawer [also black, albeit faded], toe into my lime green flip-flops, and then go to search for a calf-scaring object, such as a broom or something. ... anybody? No? Huh. I was gonna start a club and everything.

So, the new calf isn't faring so well. Mainly, it's due to the fact that he's got a tiny little mouth, and his mother's got an oversized udder, so he can't latch on and nurse. Last night I went out to see the cows, because um... COWS. And I asked my brother when he was going to let them out of the pen, into the small pasture connecting.
